Monica is a Program Officer for FNV’s Justice with Dignity (JWD) and the Lifting Voices of Resistance programs. Her principal areas of work in JWD are on California statewide advocacy campaigns and on work by formerly incarcerated people and their communities. Her focus in the Voices program is on peace and anti-militarism grantmaking. Monica has worked as a human rights advocate in various settings throughout her career, initially focusing on Latin American human rights and social movement building. Prior to joining the FNV staff, Monica worked with community-based organizations working on US-Latin America policy issues. She has also worked as an educator and advocate in public education in Santa Cruz County, focusing on the education and rights of low-income immigrant and Latino children and their families. Monica graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a B.A. in Politics with honors and a M.A. in Education. She was a founding Board member of the Fund for Nonviolence and served on the Board through 2009. While on the FNV Board Monica helped to develop the Justice with Dignity and the Lifting Voices of Resistance programs and she continues to contribute to their growth.
