Monica joined the FNV staff in 2005. Monica has worked as a human rights advocate in various settings throughout her career, initially focusing on Latin American human rights and social movement building. Since 2011, as a program officer for FNV’s Justice with Dignity (JWD) program and the Lifting Voices of Resistance program, Monica has continued to expand her human rights advocacy interests. The focus of her work within the JWD program is on California statewide advocacy campaigns and on work by formerly incarcerated people and their communities. Prior to joining the FNV staff, Monica worked as an educator and advocate in public education in Santa Cruz County, focusing on the education and rights of low-income immigrant and Latino children and their families. Monica graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a B.A. in Politics with honors and a M.A. in Education. She was a founding Board member of the Fund for Nonviolence and served on the Board through 2009. While on the FNV Board Monica was a member of the Justice with Dignity and the Lifting Voices of Resistance Board Committees and has been active in the grantmaking and development of those programs since their inception.
